Art in Motion

Life’s magic lies in remaining open to the unknown, welcoming whatever experiences may come my way with open arms.
— Jordi B.

Art and creation goes hand in hand with travel and experiences. Embracing a nomadic, bohemian lifestyle fueled by passion and wanderlust is our friend of the Indie LA Experience Podcast - Jordi B. From fine art and tattoo, to inspired culinary dishes in the kitchen, Jordi’s time traveling the world has left an impact on her creative mind. She shared some of her amazing journey with us on the podcast, and we felt compelled to dig deeper.

What is the biggest hurdle you've had to overcome as a creative, and how did push through it?

The greatest challenge I faced was sustaining myself solely through my art. I've always been fully committed to my craft and knew that taking on another job would detract from my artistic pursuit. Initially, I grappled with understanding how to make a living from my passion. Even now, the fear of financial independence occasionally looms over me

However, with perseverance, I managed to carve out a path. As I shared my work with more people, especially during my relocation, opportunities began to unfold. Fortunately, some individuals not only appreciated my art but also chose to immortalize it through tattoos or purchase a printing. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to these patrons. They are the driving force behind my journey, providing both encouragement and motivation.

We spoke a lot about your travels on the podcast, and all the cultures you’ve gotten to experience. What are some of those experiences or customs that really stood out or that you've adopted into your life?

Traveling has transformed my kitchen immensely, reflecting my greatest passion: cooking. From a young age, I assisted my mother in the kitchen, where Moroccan, Spanish, and Israeli cuisines melded together like a vibrant painting. Each dish was a symphony of colors and aromas, invoking feelings of home and comfort.

During my journeys through Eastern countries like India, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, I delved into local kitchens, absorbing diverse cooking techniques and seasoning with exotic spices. These flavors have since become essential in my culinary repertoire. Moreover, my musical tastes have expanded with my travels, with new styles finding a permanent place in my playlist. Above all, nomadic living has taught me the value of spontaneity and embracing opportunities. Life's magic lies in remaining open to the unknown, welcoming whatever experiences may come my way with open arms

Tell us about one of the craziest requests you’ve had as a tattoo artist. What was the story behind it?

The craziest tattoo request I've received was for a wedding anniversary tattoo. A client approached me with a unique idea to surprise her partner. She brought a doodle featuring two doves holding a ring with their wedding date, all positioned over the bikini line.

I admired her courage and determination to bring her vision to life. The challenge lay in the placement and the small size of the sketch, which required intricate detailing to ensure longevity.

Despite the unconventional nature of the tattoo, the experience was filled with laughter as we shared in their love story during the session.

Walk us through an average day in the life of Jordi B. - the Artist. What is your routine like in Los Angeles? What kind of things do you do on a daily basis to help with motivation and creativity?

Los Angeles, my love! A realm of sun, sea, and enchanting solitude. I devote four days a week to my studio work, while at home, I indulge in sketching during evenings, accompanied by classical melodies and a soothing cup of mint tea. As I peruse my list of sketches, I immerse myself in the creative process, often sharing insights with my clients along the way.

Recently, I've started going to the gym, recognizing the importance of maintaining my physical well-being as I age. I acknowledge the toll tattooing can take on my back and hands, prompting me to prioritize strengthening exercises to ensure l can do the thing I love for many more years. Writing has always been a cherished aspect of my life, I enjoy writing my thoughts and I have many poems and self-insights through writing.

Our household thrives on music, ranging from salsa to techno to trance. Dancing serves as a cathartic release, a tradition deeply ingrained in my upbringing. Raised in a family deeply connected to the trance music scene, I continue to share these experiences with my mother, attending festivals together and embracing the rhythm of life.

How do you gauge your success as an Artist?

The world is in the midst of a profound transformation, ushering in a new era marked by technological advancements and unprecedented connectivity. While social networks offer vast audiences and opportunities, they also introduce anxieties about public reactions and fierce competition. Amidst these challenges, it's crucial to focus on the positives and draw inspiration from the fear of missing out (FOMO) to strive for personal growth.

The age of AI presents both opportunities and concerns for artists. We are now tasked with not only creating art but also managing our online presence as creators, editors, and directors. Our work becomes a reflection of our inner selves, exposed to the scrutiny of social media metrics and the innate human tendency for comparison.

My greatest challenge lies in remaining true to my artistic vision, prioritizing authenticity over catering to popular tastes. Success, to me, is not a destination but a continuous journey of self-expression and growth. As long as I find inspiration in my work and continue to create and tattoo, I consider myself successful, embracing each step of the journey with gratitude and fulfillment.

What is on the Horizon for you in 2024?

As we prepare for the journey ahead in 2024, we reflect on the pain and sorrow that engulfed us and the world at the beginning of the year. This period of darkness served as a stark reminder of life's resilience and the invaluable nature of time.

In response, we have made the decision to break free from the confines of everyday life and embark on a journey of self-discovery and connection with nature. For six months, we will venture to distant lands with no itinerary or expectations, seeking solace in the simplicity of disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with ourselves.

I am filled with anticipation for the experiences that lie ahead and the lessons they will impart. May we all recognize the importance of knowing when to pause and allow our souls to recharge. Through this journey, my greatest hope is to reaffirm the inherent goodness of humanity and rekindle our love for kindness. Let us allow the universe to guide us as we open our hearts to new experiences.

Until we meet again in America next year, I look forward to sharing new stories and creations, enriched by the profound journey we are about to undertake.
