A Tall Glass of…

Don’t give up on looking for your people. They will find you, but you have to keep putting yourself out there. Even if it stings.
— Nixxi

Nixxi describes herself as an adult in a six year olds body. Her character and personality shines to life jumping from the page with clear creative influences derived heavily from cartoons, comics, and video games. We had the opportunity to get to know her and explore her musical career as a singer + songwriter, and get a taste for her character work as a voice actor on The Indie LA Experience Podcast. She recently released her brand new EP - A Tall Glass of… and we drank it right up.

Talk to us about more about your beverage themed EP Release - “A Tall Glass of…”. What was your inspiration behind the EP? What is it about beverages that sparked the creativity behind your lyrics?

I really like beverages. I wrote Chocolate Milk, Lemonade, and Soda individually throughout the course of a year. When I realized they were all drinks I thought it was hilarious and cute so I decided I wanted to release them together! It’s a weirdly large part of my identity how much I like fun beverages.

We learned how important cartoons have been to your creative journey, and how you used the theme song from “Steven Universe” as part of your audition for Berkeley College of Music. What is it about “Steven Universe” that is so special to you?

Steven Universe is a show that means everything to me. It shows the beauty of life as it changes and the wonders of friendship, kindness, and love and how fulfilling life can be with those things in it.

Do you recall a specific moment in time, event, or performance where it hit you that this is what you wanted to do with your life?

I had always known that I was passionate about performing, but one year, I went to a summer camp held by Equality Maine where we had an arts night and everyone in my songwriting group told me I needed to share my song “Cartoon Heart” with the whole camp. I did, and the support I received afterwards was insane. Finding LGBTQ+ music has become less difficult in recent years, but the world could definitely stand to see more.

Nixxi “Connections are Key”

What is the BEST career or life advice you have ever received from a teacher, family/friend or colleague? What was the WORST?

The BEST advice I’ve ever received is to know your limits. I always want to do everything as quick as possible, but when I see the signs that my battery is getting low, I know I need to rest for a day because if I kill my battery I won’t be able to be productive for a good month or so. The WORST advice I’ve ever received was to save money by eating ramen everyday…. My urologist can tell you why. Don’t sacrifice your health. Ever.

If you could go back in time and say something to your younger self in Maine getting ready to move to LA, what would it be?

Don’t give up on looking for your people after you fail in one place. They will find you, but you have to keep putting yourself out there, even if it stings a bit.

Given your lyrical nature and passion for Storytelling, If you ever did sit down to write a book or novel, what would it be about?

It would be a fantasy book in which the main character is a badass lesbian and all the girls want her. That’s all I’ve got, but it would need to make people cry or else it would never see the light of day.
